Hey Golfers!
If you're excited about the 2010 Golf Season, here's what you need to know!
Our golf program is designed to help athletes develop individual golf skills that enhance performance at three different levels.
(1) Individual Skills Competition- For many golfers, the primary action will revolve around the putting green in for six events: short putt, long putt, chip shot, pitch shot, iron and wood. In fact, all golfers must score a 40 during an Individual Skills contest at a Special Olympics sanctioned competition before they can compete in the 9-hole event. Those who score less than 40 can still compete in the three hole individual or alternate shot events.
(2) Alternate Shot Team Play- what's that? An Alternate Shot Team is one that includes one player with an intellectual disability and one without an intellectual disability. The idea is that the athlete's partner will serve as a mentor, guiding the athlete to more self-sufficiency.
All athletes can play alternate shot with a partner of their choosing at the 3-hole level. Athletes must score a 40 on the individual skills test at the area tournament to compete in nine-hole play.
One the ball is in play, golfers take alternate turns hitting the ball, posting one score between them at the end of the hole.
(3)
Traditional Shot - athletes play three or nine holes. A coach or caddie can join the athlete but may not offer any guidance. (Again, athletes must score a 40 on the individual skills test at the area tournament to compete in nine-hole play.)
| • | All athletes, regardless of ability and age, are welcome to be a part of the South Region Stars Golf Team; however space is limited. |
| • | You must contact Coach Sandy Conway if you want to play. Write to Coach Sandy at sander1950@yahoo.com. She will tell you whether or not there is room for more athletes. |
| • | This is a great sport for those who don't like team competitions or require a sport that's physically less strenuous than softball. | • | Regardless of whether you plan to participate in a meet, all athletes must be registered with Special Olympics of Minnesota to participate. This includes completing a consent form and physical examination and sending these documents to SOMN. |
